Swannie Award – Debating
Last year was quite eventful for the year 10 (now year 11) debating team, remaining undefeated until the 2nd round of Victorian debating Playoffs. It was a momentous effort for the team, but it was made easier by the huge amount of support, from both families and staff. Often, the debate rooms were filled with supporters cheering us on in uncertain moments to success.
At the end of the season, I had the privilege of receiving a Swannie Award from the Debaters Association of Victoria alongside a fellow debater, Thomas from the senior debate team. The Swannie Awards are given annually to the best speaker from each grade and region in Victoria based on their average speaker scores.
Receiving this award is truly a milestone in my debating journey, from stumbling through the first few debates to now artfully crafting rebuttals. The journey has been long and continues, having been filled with teamwork, fun and satisfying moments.
I want to thank past and current debating teachers who have inspired, helped, and mentored me and my teammates. Without your dedication, time and effort I’m not sure we could’ve reached the heights that we have.
To reflect, the team has celebrated so many successes, all of us receiving best speakers at one time or another, reaching the Playoffs and then Octofinals (top 16 teams in the state). I highly recommend giving debating a go even if you aren’t a natural public speaker, not only can you learn as you go but are surrounded by like-minded individuals who cheer each other on to great heights.
