Debating Update
Throughout term 3, our debating teams continued to build on their skills, meeting weekly and participating in a range of practice debates, as well competing in the official DAV competition. Our senior team met weekly to plan, practice and reflect on past and upcoming topics – the team remained undefeated until our first round of finals where we were beat by Melbourne Grammar.
This term we had some tough topics to debate, including whether cities facing housing crises should remove all heritage protections and building restrictions and if alternative medicine should be banned. Although term 3 saw the end of our debating journey for our senior team, we are beyond proud of our senior debaters for both making it to finals and continuing to represent our school community with passion and pride. Our senior debaters have been a big contributor to our school’s debating community, offering support and feedback to our junior team as they embarked on their debating journey.
Our junior team, on the other hand, got their first taste of debating with 4 rounds of training and practice debates. Debating topics like the banning of advertisements to children, the necessity for online stores to have physical stores and the impact of technology on education. Our junior debaters won two out of three debates and represented the Fitzroy High School community with integrity and pride and are excited to participate in next year’s competition.
It has been a pleasure to see our debating teams continue to grow into a supportive, passionate and successful community of students and teachers. We look forward to what 2025 debating will bring.
