Cooking Masterclass with Rumi
On Tuesday 25 June our year 9 food technology students were visited by Melbourne chef and restaurateur Joseph Abboud and his apprentice Bubble Booker-Malcolm. Joseph and Bubble led students through a masterclass in Middle Eastern cuisine, cooking recipes from Joseph’s new cookbook Rumi: Food of Middle Eastern Appearance along the way.
The day was organised by our food technology teacher James H, who just so happens to be a former apprentice of Joseph’s AND a former food technology teacher of Bubble’s. Bubble is interviewed about her journey into the world of commercial cookery (and the value of her food technology education at FHS) on the Deep In The Weeds podcast (link here).
Thanks to Joseph and Bubble for being a continued part of our school community – we are stronger (and better fed) for it!
FHS 2024 Production
Hello and welcome to the first FHS 2024 Production cast member interview!
Isla M is playing the role of Carmen, one of the three sisters in This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing. Carmen is the youngest sibling of three and is very sweet, caring and kind but can also be self-deprecating, ‘she finds the world to be a pretty hard and hefty place for herself’. A main feature of this role throughout the play is a journey to find herself.
Isla recognises and wants to further deepen, refine and rehearse their interest in Carmen’s emotions and personality such as her generosity, which Isla explained that she thinks this a very key part of Carmen’s personality. Isla was first drawn to the role during a table read, ‘I wanted to read her as the table read ‘cause my mum’s name is Carmen, I thought that’d be pretty funny’ but then, as Isla read, a love and respect for the character was realised. After this she was motivated to audition for the role because of her passion and love for the theatre and wanting to be a part of the experience.
We asked Isla what she thinks is her worst quality and she said it was her memory and forgetfulness, which we asked how it would help and she said it probably wouldn’t, but we’re sure she can surpass this struggle and come into the role.
Isla’s favourite drink is hot chocolate, especially Cadbury drinking chocolate. She also enjoys pancakes with maple syrup, greek yoghurt, and melted frozen raspberries.
