Book Week
This year Fitzroy High School is joining the World Literacy Foundation to spread the joy and power of reading during Book Week 2024.
The World Literacy Foundation is leading this year’s Book Week Fundraiser aiming to provide books and educational resources to children in underserved communities in Kayunga, Uganda. The initiative encourages early learning centres, primary & secondary schools in Australia to fundraise by hosting book related activities during book week in August.
The Book Week Fundraiser donations will go to Uganda due to 95% of children in rural areas not owning a single book. With resources scarce only a small 12% of children have the ability to read. Money raised will help to build 5 school libraries giving access to over 2,500 books directly to Ugandan children. The World Literacy Foundation is excited to see the appeal combat the high illiteracy rates linked to low life expectancies and poverty in these areas.
Book Week runs during Term 3 of the current school year from the 17th to the 23rd of August. We are excited to announce some of the exciting events that will be held during this week to help raise funds.
Book Character Dress-Up Day
For one day of the week, children are asked to dress up as their favourite book character. Staff and students will spend the whole day in costume and bring along a gold coin donation to the school. In 2024 the Book Week Character Dress-up Day will be on the 23rd of August.
Book Sale Initiative
For the entire week, a Book Sale will be set up on campus. Students can bring in second-hand books to sell and raise money for the Uganda project. The Book Sale will run during break time Monday to Friday in the school library. For any donations of pre-loved books, please kindly drop off at the admin office or to the donation box in the Year 8 office.
Readathon for Uganda
We will be holding a Readathon for Uganda. Students will keep a record of how long they are reading each night to reach a combined total of hours of reading by the end of Book Week. Teachers will write down the collective time of each class and prizes will be given for classes with the most hours.
The week will be filled with fun, charity, and literacy. We encourage students to get involved and discover the power of literacy!
