SWPBS – Behaviour Blitz
Hello and welcome back to the new school year at Fitzroy High School!
For those who haven’t come across it before, School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is a framework designed to teach and encourage students to positively engage with each other and their community in a respectful manner. It focuses on building positive relationships which are embedded throughout our collaborative learning model and creates an environment for learning built on mutual trust and respect.
Last year was an exciting time for the SWPBS Program at FHS, with the return of the Positive Shop and the establishment of Behaviour Focus Cycles (or “Behaviour Blitzes”), and this year looks to be equally exciting as we continue to grow the program.
We’ve already begun our first Behaviour Blitz of the year, focusing on being Prepared and Present. This started with an explanation of why it’s important to be prepared and present in life as well as tips on how students can maintain and enjoy these benefits. This is then reinforced by a positive point reward when students were seen to be practicing those tips. In fact, over 120 positive points have been awarded as part of this blitz already!
Speaking of points, last year over 5,000 points were awarded and exchanged through the positive shop for more than 50 different prizes. The support that we had for this program was so overwhelming that we’ve had to re-evaluate how we keep track and run the shop! This year the shop will continue to open in the TDU during the last week of term so that students can exchange their points, and will be run in collaboration with the Student Representative Team. While I won’t spoil all the surprises, there are plans for greater student and family involvement than ever before to continue growing this outstanding program and continue to reward positive behaviours.
