Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge at FHS…
The Premiers Reading Challenge is up and running in the Library as of the start of term two. It will continue until late term 3.
All year 7’s and year 8’s are registered. Any year 9 or 10 students who wish to `opt in’ are welcome to do so and need to see me in the Library for registration details.
Students are being encouraged to challenge themselves with their reading choices, rather than challenge/race each other for the most books read. We acknowledge that, for some students, finishing a book or two is a greater challenge than for others who are confident, comfortable readers.
`Happy Reading’ to all those taking part.
Year 10 English – Library Sessions
Sessions in the library have taken on a different flavour during term 2. Based on themes from their text study `Maus’ students are focusing on building their capacity in the following areas.
- Development of search skills for print, online and audio visual learning resources.
- The identification of good and useful information which can be linked to a learning outcome, intention or task.
- Linking information they have searched to themes in the novel `Maus’.
- Summarising information in their own words – building writing skills.
- Evaluation of online sites and information.
- The identification of misleading and poorly organised information online.
- Building on their referencing skills.
This work will take us into term 3 and will provide a sound basis for learning in the latter part of year 10 and in VCE.
Year 9 Humanities – `Industrial Revolution’ study
In the next few weeks all year 9 classes will be in the Library building their Information Fluency skills as they work on their study of the `Industrial Revolution’. We will be building student capacity in the following areas using year 9 History textbooks, graphic organisers, along with Weblinks and the Harvard Referencing Tool both purchased by FHS Library.
- Location of information in a text book.
- Ensuring the information being used is relevant to question or focus.
- Extracting the main ideas from printed and online text.
- Summarising the main ideas from both print and online text.
- Referencing both print and online information.
- Referencing online and print material.
This work will form part of a wider Library teaching and learning programme in the planning process for FHS Library.
Overdues/Amnesty on Returns
One of the challenges facing FHS Library is the large number of unreturned items, books, devices, device chargers etc. This is, in the main, attributable to the COVID lockdowns which were often quite sudden, along with the disruption to school routines, which were generated by remote learning.
In order to retrieve these items, if you come on any item that has this barcode on it …..
It would be really appreciated, now and at any time in the future, FHS Library resources are brought back to the library and placed in `the blue tub’ ….
With the onset of the colder weather, more students continue to enjoy the Library space at both recess and lunchtime for socialising, games, reading and online activities.
