COVID-19 and the need for new technologies: How can our young generation help tackle the other big global crisis
Over the course of the pandemic, people have largely adapted to new ways of living – working from home, sanitising their hands. All of this has been necessary, but what more can we do? Two of our year 11 students Carmen H and Jasper H shared with us one possibility: Microminds Mask Washer, a new type of washing machine designed specifically for washing masks and protecting users from Covid-19 and other viruses.
At the beginning, Carmen and Jasper noticed that the pandemic has accelerated a number of trends that will be fundamental to do things, such as sustainability. “Ever since the uprise of covid cases around the world, it was inevitable that face masks would be utilised to reduce the spread throughout communities. Face masks can come as disposable rubbish, or reusable fabrics,” Carmen and Jasper said, “For those who use fabric masks, they can either hand wash them, or toss them into a washing machine. While it is imperative to wash masks properly, modern sized washing machines are far too large for masks, which can waste large amounts of water. You can wash them with other clothes, but is that really ideal? What if you lose it like a sock?”
“Microminds Mask washers are designed to use small amounts of water, while maintaining efficiency to wash, and dry your mask ready for use. The miniature scale of the washing machine is perfectly designed for your face mask!” they said.
Carmen and Jasper spent their term 3 2021 working on their project and was supported step by step by their Computing teacher Min. Min submitted their work to the Young ICT Explorer Competition in October.
