Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition
Fitzroy High School’s Year 9 students recently showcased their language skills by participating in the prestigious Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition, a long-standing state-wide event in Victoria that celebrates the beauty of Italian literature. This year, the students chose to recite “Mi Piacerebbe” by renowned poet Gianni Rodari.
Participating in such a competition requires a unique blend of strategies, skill, and courage, especially for language learners. Students had to immerse themselves in the nuances of pronunciation, emotion, and rhythm, working diligently to convey the poem’s meaning effectively. This process not only honed their linguistic abilities but also fostered personal growth and maturity, as they confronted their fears of public speaking and embraced their study of Italian.
Following the competition, students were invited to the Poets Pizza Party, where they shared their experiences of learning and presenting in Italian. Conversations flowed as they reflected on the challenges they faced and the confidence they gained. This experience underscored the vital role that arts and culture play in language learning and personal development.
