Great results in 2022 NAPLAN and the Student Attitudes to School Survey.
NAPLAN
We are very proud of our recent NAPLAN results, which surpassed most of the targets that we had in our 2022 Annual Implementation Plan, as follows:
To increase the proportion of students in the top two bands of NAPLAN in Year 9:
Reading from 28.4% in the top 2 bands in 2021 to 30% by 2022. We achieved 34%!
Writing from 13% in the top 2 bands in 2021 to 20% by 2022. We achieved 24%!
Numeracy from 10% in the top 2 bands 2021 to 15% by 2022. We achieved 21%!
The NAPLAN results show excellent improvement, not only in Year 9 Reading, Writing and Numeracy, but also in the remaining two areas of Spelling and Grammar and Punctuation, the latter having 39% of students in the top two bands! Our results in these areas are higher than schools in our network and higher than or the same as schools that are categorised as “similar” to us, including some private schools. Well done to the students who achieved these outstanding results!
Our whole school writing strategy, which has been a focus of the last 3 years, has certainly paid off and I would like to thank all the teachers and inclusion staff for their hard work. I would also like to acknowledge the hard work and effort our students demonstrate and continue to demonstrate towards improving their writing skills. Some great improvements have also been evident in Year 9 Numeracy with a higher percentage of students in the Top 2 bands and no students in the Bottom 2 bands! Thank you to our Numeracy team for your continued focus on improving the numeracy outcomes of all students at FHS.
Student Attitudes to School Survey
We have also had some very pleasing results in relation to the 2022 Student Attitudes to School Survey. The AtoSS is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist schools to gain an understanding of students’ perceptions and experience of school. The following factors that we have been working on this year in particular have all improved and were mostly rated higher than the state average, network schools and “similar” schools.
We wanted to improve the per cent of positive endorsement in the Students Attitudes to School Survey (Years 7-12) in the following areas:
Teacher concern was 42% compared with 36% for the state, 34% for the network and 31% for “similar” schools
Effective classroom behaviour was 60% compared with 55% for the state, 58% for the network and 54% for “similar” schools
Sense of connectedness was 57% compared with 48% for the state, 54% for the network and 48% for “similar” schools
Attitudes to Attendance was 80% compared with 75% for the state, 81% for the network and 77% for “similar” schools
Stimulated learning was 58% compared with 51% for the state, 54% for the network and 48% for “similar” schools
Sense of confidence was 58% compared with 56% for the state, 59% for the network and 54% for “similar” schools
Student voice, agency and leadership was 48% compared with 41% for the state, 42% for the network and 37% for “similar” schools
Motivation and interest was 63% compared with 56% for the state, 61% for the network and 54% for “similar” schools
Differentiated learning challenge was 60% compared with 56% for the state, 55% for the network and 53% for “similar” schools
While we continue to focus on areas that still need improvement, it is very important to stop, reflect, recognise and celebrate the efforts and achievements of our school community.
These great results are testament to our continued focus on developing the capacity of our students and teachers to engage together in authentic learning partnerships. They are particularly pleasing after the challenges of the past two years of Covid, lockdown and remote learning, as well as the opening of our new Wurun Senior Campus.
