Principal’s Report, February 2021

Dear school community,

A belated welcome to 2021 and I look forward to working with you all this year.

Firstly, I would like to congratulate the class of 2020 for their efforts and achievements. A special congratulations to Tallulah Thornton-Lawrence who was dux of the school. We will be posting a separate, more detailed article about Year 12 completion rates, study scores and ATARs, as well as the pathways and destinations of the cohort.

As we move on from the challenges of 2020, it is worth remembering how strong our community has been, and I want to thank each and every one of you for your support and for your dedication to the education of our young people. It is also worth remembering that many challenges remain as a result of 2020 and the ongoing, unpredictable nature of Covid 19. Responding quickly to the recent snap lockdown is one example. Responding gradually to the emerging issues of learning and wellbeing is another example.

Although there are many examples of the school supporting students’ individual needs, I would like to mention a couple of programs that stand out this year. One program is made available by the learning catchup funding from the government. Fitzroy High School has been given funding equivalent to about one and a half teachers to support small groups of students with catching up on their leaning. This tutoring program is well underway, with students in various year levels being identified for general catchup or specific literacy and numeracy intervention. The other program is our wellbeing support, led by Linda Ekman, our wellbeing leader, along with our psychologists Joanne Burch and Jamie Bishop. Last year Jamie was successful in obtaining the Mental Health Practitioner role. Due to the demand for wellbeing services this year, Jamie will be increasing his time as a psychologist and therefore no longer teaching his classes. The school has appointed Emma Bleazby, an extremely well qualified teacher, to take over Jamie’s classes over the next couple of weeks.

I would also like to introduce and welcome other new staff members: Imogen Lazarus (Italian and English), Hanna Yammouni (VCAL, Health and PE), Min Xu (Maths and Applied Computing), Linh Nguyen (Maths and Science), Bianca Merkel (VCAL and Humanities), Dylan Wood (Maths and Science), Caitlin Berry (Drama and English), Rose Nezhad (Science Technician), Jacqueline Choppin (Food Technician), Emily Kennan, Maddie Bullen and Molly Thomas (Administration).

Last but not least, I would like to formally congratulate Andrea Thompson, who was successful in gaining the position of Assistant Principal, a role in which she has been acting for 18 months. Andrea will act as Principal from March 29-April 30 while I have a medical procedure. I am thrilled to be working with both Andrea and Chris Millard, who I announced late last year as the successful candidate for the Campus Principal (Assistant Principal) of the new Gasworks (interim name) Senior Secondary campus of Fitzroy High School and Collingwood College. It is an exciting time for our school as this new campus is built, ready to open next year. Kind regards

Linda Mitchell, Principal
