Asylum Seeker Resource Centre – Thank You

FHS has received the below letter regarding a recent food drive which was coordinated by two of our current year 9 students. FHS is very proud of the magnificent effort of Orga and Cassi.

————————————————————————————————–
On behlf of the ASRC Foodbank, we want to say a huge thank you to your students Orga M and Cassandra B from year 8 (2016) who coordinated a food drive at Fitzroy High School. It is so inspiring for us here at ASRC to hear about the engagement of students like Orga and Cassandra and how this has translated into the practical provision of food to support people seeking asylum in our community!

We are in no doubt that this also occurs through the encouragement and guidance of your teachers and school philosophy. Please pass on our thanks to your teaching team as well.

The Foodbank operates as a free grocery store for people seeking asylum, where they can choose their own items, providing dignity and access to food they can't afford to buy. Approximately 600 asylum seekers shop at the food bank each week and half of those rely on us as their sole source of food. Many of these people are denied the right to seek work and earn an income, while others may receive small amounts. Sadly this is increasingly the case and the call on our service is growing.

Without an income to support themselves, the Foodbank wants to ensure that those seeking asylum in our community are not left without healthy food in constant supply and basic household items.

With the community's support, the ASRC currently provides:

  • groceries to 600 people every week. many of whom are children
  • support to families who have no income at all and more than 90% of all our ASRC members are food insecure
  • food in a fair and dignified way that is healthy and culturally appropriate
  • essential items to make transition to a new life more comfortable

We couldn't do it without you! 85% of all groceries in the Foodbank are donated by generous supporters just like your school!
