FAQ's

How can you cater to my child’s individual needs?

Our focus is on knowing our students well. This allows us to recognise the talents and passions of our students and provide opportunities for them to excel in these areas. Further to this, we work with our students and their families to identify the areas where students need additional support.

The Advisory teacher is central to this, working with students and their families to set appropriate goals and targets to challenge all students to be the best they can be. Some of our students are very self-motivated and need little direction to do this, while others need more support. Our approach to Advisory allows this to happen.

How much homework will my child get in Year 7?

We recognise that students have diverse interests and that they have many out of school commitments, such as membership in sporting teams. When setting homework for students we keep this in mind and are careful not to overload students. Students will receive regular homework in core areas including Maths and Language Toolbox. At times, they will also have project-based work with a greater out of school commitment.

Fitzroy High School is not my closest school, but I am very interested in sending my child there

We do our best to make sure there is a good match between the student and the school. We do this by inviting families to the school to see us in action. Where possible we will do our best to accommodate the interest of families outside the local area. If you wish to apply for a place at the school on curriculum grounds, you will need to apply directly to the school.

How do you respond if a student is being bullied at school?

Fitzroy High School has a commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for all of our students. We are committed to knowing our students well, and recognise that good relationships between students and their teachers are at the core of this. Any reports of bullying are responded to quickly and students are supported throughout.

My child is very active. What sporting opportunities are there at Fitzroy High School?

In Year 7 students are introduced to our sporting program that consists of 90 minutes of Physical Activity and 90 minutes of Sport per week. Students select a sport of choice each term and first play against their peers and then compete at an interschool level. Some of the sports on offer throughout the year include volleyball, soccer, netball, tennis, badminton, football, baseball, and cricket. Further to this, students can work towards specific sporting goals through the Excel program.

We are proud of the successes of our students. Many students compete at a zone level following the whole school athletics and swimming days and interschool sports days.

Are there performance opportunities?

There are many formal and informal opportunities to perform. Every year we have either a school play or school cabaret. These are highlights of the school calendar and an opportunity to showcase the talents of the student body. Within teams there are exhibition nights held throughout the year. These curriculum-based presentations are a great way for students to demonstrate their learning.

We are always looking for opportunities for students to perform, whether a lunchtime concert, school bands performing at local fêtes or a drama performance for visiting guests.

Will my child be prepared for VCE?

We are very proud of our VCE results and the pathways that our VCE students have taken after leaving Fitzroy High School. We believe our students’ success is the result of many factors: their commitment to their learning which is enhanced by their capacity to set realistic yet challenging goals for themselves; the positive relationships that they have developed with their teachers over the years; and the impact of an integrated approach to learning.
